Desert Canyon Golf Club

Desert Canyon Golf Club opened in 1971 and for the past 36 years this golf course has been treating golfers to a fabulous experience. Unlike many golf courses in the desert, this is more of a resort-style golf course featuring holes that run parallel to each other and have grass between them. The golf course is built within a housing development where many of the holes are surrounded by large homes on both sides of the fairway.

Desert Canyon is located in Fountain Hills - a community about 30 minutes from Phoenix. Only two holes on the golf course feature water. For the most part the golf course has wide fairways and generous greens.

One of the things that makes this golf course challenging is that it is a par 71. There is only one par-5 on the back nine, but most of the par-5's can be reached in two shots by the average player. The longest par-3 on the golf course plays over 240 yards from the back tee and has a well-bunkered green.

When this golf course was first built, accuracy was the most important part of the game. The fairways are lined with weeping willows and all kinds of other trees. Occasionally you will find the desert shrub or cactus but they are not the dominant landscape feature.

Desert Canyon is a short golf course that plays only slightly over 6,400 yards. This is very refreshing as it allows all levels of golfers a chance to have a great time. Modern golf course designers focus so much on making their golf courses long that they sometimes forget that golf should be fun.

You may expect the desert to be fairly flat, but Desert Canyon has many dramatic elevation changes. A perfect example is the 7th hole which has been voted one of Arizona's Best 18 holes. This par-3 has a green that sits well below the level of the tee.

While you are on the property you will want to check out the world's tallest rising fountain. This fountain has enough pressure that it forces water an incredible 550 feet into the air. I am sure you can see this water spout from almost any position on the golf course.

If you are looking for a fun time and an opportunity to shoot a low score, Desert Canyon may just be the right fit!
